A Thousand Steps Forward
A beautiful feature post by Single Strides.
A thousand steps forward, then a hundred steps back. Those hundred steps feel like the end of the world. They feel like the ground beneath you just collapsed and you have no bearing. You feel angry and deprecated that some other source has the power to crumble you to unknown accounts.
A thousand steps forward, then a hundred steps back. You smile for months on end. You make progress between the broken parts of yourself. You start to tie up the loose ends. You make new paths and pave them with your optimism. Then the night comes. The darkness covers the sun you blew up like a balloon and let it fly into clouds.
A thousand steps forward, then a hundred steps back. Sometimes you falter. Sometimes you misbehave. Sometimes you make mistakes and you punish yourself for all of it. You reprimand yourself even though the rest of the world has already forgotten.
A thousand steps forward, then a hundred steps back. So you messed up. Well, now what? Sit and sulk. Sit and ponder. Sit? Don’t sit. Get up. You cannot fix the past by mulling over it. Because, you can’t fix the past at all, in fact all you can do is control the future. Don’t like your actions? Don’t do them again. Don’t like how you felt? Learn to control it. Don’t like what you said? Watch what you say.
A thousand steps forward, then a hundred steps back. Then, one step forward. Do not, I repeat, do not stay sedentary. Do not sit in misery or regret. There is another day and another time for judgment day. Right now, right now is the only now that you have. So use it to your advantage. Appreciate it. Make the best of it. Learn from it. Do something with it.
A thousand steps forward, then a hundred steps back. Then, two steps forward. So it happened again. So you feel this way again. One day you wont. One day you’ll stop making the same mistake. Because instead of sulking, you will learn, when you learn one step turns into two, and then two steps turns into four. So keep on moving. You’ll never get further by staring off into the past.
A thousand steps forward, then a hundred steps back. Then, two thousand steps forward. What was that mistake? You don’t even remember. Why? It doesn’t matter now. You’ve moved past it. Maybe it took you longer than the rest of the world but you did. And now? Now you’re happier, you’re smarter and you’re wiser. But you wouldn’t be unless you made those mistakes. But now instead of focusing on them you focus on the success they have brought you.
A thousand steps forward, then a hundred steps back. Then, what’s the step count? You’ve moved so far forward you’ve lost count. You’re in another part of your life where the past is untouchable to your present. You only worry about the road in front of you and not the one that you took to get there.
Have you faltered? Probably. Have you tripped? Most likely. Have you straight up fucked up? Obviously. But did you keep going? Hell yes. So as long as you keep moving forward and you stop looking back… Well, not only are you living but you’re also quite the salsa dancer. So keep dancing that cha-cha, dear, because moving on happens best when you move. And learning to dance with life is just another upside.
A thousand steps forward, then a hundred steps back. Each single stride makes a difference in the end.
